Starting The Second Period of Studying The Southern Iraqi Marshes

A team from the .Marine Science Centre ,Basrah Universities and other Iraqi Universities had started The second phase of monitoring program of the southern Iraqi marshes .This is an activity of cooperation between the MSC and Waterloo Universities , Canada as a Canadian initiative .About 13 stations were selected from the 3 major southern Marshes of Amara, Nasiriah and Basrah province. The sampling has been commenced on 26.1.2008 and ended in 12 .2. 2008 .Data collected were :The Physical ,Chemical , Biological properties of the Marshes ,fish population dynamics ,primary productivity ,Zooplankton ,benthos...etc

New Scientific Finding :

A New species of phyllodaptomus Klefer (Copepoda.Calannoida) from the shatt Al_Arab river, southern Iraq was found by Dr.Talib A.Khalaf, vice general director. It was described as phyll .irakiensis sp.nov. Is the second species recorded of the genus from southern Iraq.`


 

 
 

 Scientific Cooperation Between Marine Science Center And University of Al Muthana

A scientific agreement has been signed between MSC and Al- Muthana University in Al-Muthana governorate, It included the  cooperation in scientific research especially on Sawa lake and the higher studies research.

MSC had participated in the scientific conference of Al-Muthana University with a big team of researchers , the same researchers had done a complete survey on Sawa lake which was showed the great Ecological importance of this lake.


 

 
    

A new Research Vessel "Basrah University Research Vessele"

This new research vessel has been added to the MSC fleet recently. It will be used for the marine research programe in the Iraqi coastal areas.

 


 
 

Shatt Al Arab Ecological Survey

During  5/2/2008, MSC staff carried a field trip for studying the Ecological parameters of shatt Al Arab .A project was carried for a seasonal sampling of certain reference station in this river in order to monitor the changes and inspection for pollutants.


 
 

A Discussion of Doctoral Thesis

Mr. Dawood S. Mohammad of Biology department has get an excellent degree for discussing his doctoral thesis entitled " Selection of the Optimum Conditions for the best production of the brin shrimp Artemia franciscana (Kellogg) in basrah". on 23 January 2008.
